except for ~ 「～を除けば」exceptは「～のほか」という意味。除外の意味が明解でbutよりも意味が強い感じがします。名詞、代名詞、動詞、前置詞、前置詞句、that 節、 wh-節などを伴います。The library is open every day except Mondays. (その図書館は月曜日を除く毎日開館しています）There was nothing I could do except wait.(待つ以外にできることは何もなかった）He never takes a taxi except when he is tired.(彼は疲れているとき以外、決してタクシーを使わない）これに対してexcept forは「～の点だけを除けば」という意味。Except for the hotel, it was a wonderful holiday. (ホテルを除けばすばらしい休日だった）He would have quit the job except for his debt.(借金がなければ彼は仕事を辞めていただろう）因みに、except forは直説法とともに用い、but forは仮定法とともに用いられます。Nara is not worth seeing, except for its temple. / But for its temple, Nara would not be worth seeing.  But forが文中に出てくる文をみかけることがありますが、文頭がいいのじゃないかと思います。なお、but という語はby+outが短くなってできたものですから、もともとwithoutの意味を含む語だったことが分かります。
