suppose / supposing that 「もしも～ならば」 supposeはsup=sub(下に), pose(=put)ですから、「下に置く」が原義です。下に置くものは「話題」になるものと捉えればいいでしょう。そこで suppose / supposingは「想像してごらん」、とか「ちょっと考えてごらんなさい」といったニュアンスになります。普通可能性とその結果について述べる場合に用いられます。Suppose it rains；the athletic meet will be put off. (雨が降ったとしたら？　そうすると運動会は延期になる)  Suppose (that )we died; who would take care of these children? （私たちが死んでしまったら、だれがこの子供たちの面倒をみるの）Supposing (that)he can't go, who can? (彼が行けなかったらだれが行くの)同じような意味でprovided that SVがありますが、 provided that節 (=If it is provided that節の分詞構文からできたもの) から推測して、supposed that 節とするのは誤りです。「考えてごらんなさい」というsupposeが受け身になって「考えられたら」というのは変だから。ところが、providing that節(＝if we are providing that 節の分詞構文)と同じ形のsupporsing that SV になるのは、If we are supposing that 節となっても意味的におかしくないからです。
