throw in the towel 「敗北を認める」たとえば、The Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, feeling that he no longer had any chance of being elected, finally threw in the towel. (民主党の候補者は、もはや当選の見込みがないと見て、ついに敗北を認めた)(Modern American Colloquialisms)  throw in the towelは「やめる」とか「あきらめる」とか「敗北をみとめる」といった意味です。この成句はボクシングの試合中にリングにタオルを投げ入れて、試合をやめさせることから来ているようです。つまり、throw the towel in(to) the ringからthrow in the towelとなっていったようです。奇妙なのは、throw the towel in、あるいはいっそリアルにthrow the towel into the ringであれば、わかりやすいのですが、それがなぜかthrow in the towelとなる点です。なんとなくタオルの中に投げ込まれるような錯覚を覚えませんか。どうしてこんな風になるのか、訊いたのですが、残念ながらはっきりしたことはわかりません。個人的には、throwの目的語the towelを後ろに回して、throw into the ring the towel からto the ringはわかりきっていることなので省略されて、throw in the towelとなったのではないかと考えていますが、どうですかね？　 このような成句に出会うと、まさにI feel like throwing in the towel.
